Alkaline blood fights disease and helps you lose weight
Friday , April 02, 2010

I recently heard a statistic quoted by Kevin Trudeau (who wrote “The Natural Cures they don’t want us to know about”) that no one who has died of cancer had alkaline blood. They all had acidic blood. I also follow the work of Tony Robbins, who has access to the greatest medical minds on the planet, and he talks about red blood cells mutating when they are in an acid rich environment. And on the Internet there are numerous sites and stories about people who have overcome chronic body pain by changing the pH of their blood from acidic to alkaline.

Now just to back up for you – to your high school science class – let’s revise the pH thing. Very simply it is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid. A pH of 7 is neutral. Below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline. And the ideal alkalinity for the body is a pH of 7.36; but most people are sporting blood that sits permanently in the acidic range or the ideal environment for dis-ease.

The blood pH is mostly affected by the food and fluids that you consume, but also to a large extent by the quality of your thoughts. Negative emotions increase the acidity of your blood. So too does smoking, air pollution and over-exercising (excessive build up of lactic acid). I have also read where high acidity can also affect bone density.

In relation to food, it is suggested that we consume about 75-80% alkaline forming foods and the remainder as acid forming.  Most of the best alkaline foods are vegetables and fruit. Conversely the worst acid forming foods are soft drinks, alcohol, artificial sweeteners, sugar and homogenised milk. All meats and fish are acid forming and most of the grains and cereals. Coffee is also acidic and it takes about 30 glasses of water to neutralise the acid-forming effect of one cup of coffee. One thing to note is that a food or drink is determined as acid or alkaline based on the ‘ash’ that they leave in the body after they have been burned up or used for energy. That is why lemon, limes and grapefruits are highly alkaline forming food.

Now I also mentioned weight loss in relation to blood pH. The research I follow suggests that if there is excess acid in the blood the body will actually extract the acid and store it in the fat cells - as a way of insulating the body from the acid. The problem with this is if your blood acidity level is too high, the body will not allow you to lose body fat because it acts as an insulator.  And sometimes doing too much exercise, and creating too much lactic acid in your system does not help you lose weight but actually contributes to you retaining body fat.

So if you want optimum health and your ideal body weight, I strongly suggest that you focus on eating a lot more alkaline forming foods and cutting down on the acidic forming food and drinks in your diet. Plus reducing the amount of negative emotions you experience in your life.
