"No PAIN, no GAIN" is a saying that you might best relate to a blood, sweat and tears boxing gymnasium in the heart of the Bronx. But what if this fight-club sounding mantra is much more insightful than you at first imagined? Maybe the guy pounding left after right into an insanely large punching bag might actually have part of the success formula. One that is just as applicable to the entrepreneur, aspiring senior manager, or even mother of three. Let me just slip a few other words in and around those four literary pearls of wisdom and show you what I mean.
If you are not feeling any PAIN (or discomfort) then you are not likely to be motivated enough to make the changes that you have to make in order to create the greatest possible GAIN in your life. Or move up to the next level of your personal growth.
In Aikido - the thinking mans martial art - it is said that whenever you get bad news, or things go wrong, utilise the energy created by that emotional pain, to propel you forward, dislodging any obstacles in your way. You know yourself that if things go wrong, or you get some unexpected and upsetting news, it is like there is some all consuming force tugging on your consciousness or even staging a mini tornado in the pit of your stomach.
The key is to use that pain. Use the emotional energy that you feel and surge into action. Take that next step. Plunge into the unknown. Maybe take a new direction. Or pursue that job you always wanted.
Without dissatisfaction (or discomfort & pain) tugging at you, it is very unlikely that you are going to make any changes to the status quo. So don't see pain as a problem that is there to consume you. See pain as the means to motivate you and propel you towards overcoming your fears and doing what you have to do.
For example. Say I am really dissatisfied with my body at the moment. I feel emotional pain because I am looking pretty overweight, I feel self-conscious in my clothes, and it is affecting my ability to connect intimately with my partner. This is a pretty big signal. I am feeling pain because life wants better for me. And I want better for myself. So I embrace the pain. I feel myself getting to the point of 'NO MORE!" I am not going to accept this any longer! I MUST do something about it!! I am using the pain to motivate myself, and ultimately to make the gains I really desire.
So if you are feeling pain because you are short changing yourself, or life is giving you a wee shove; use that pain to create the momentum that has you saying I MUST CHANGE!!! No if's, but's or maybe's. You are actually hard-wired, like every other organism in the universe, to expand, to grow and to become more. I believe if we are not growing (mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually) towards our full potential then the universe will always step in and give us a pain injection right in the butt, to finally propel us forward.
So don't think it is over because you feel pain. See it as the beginning to an amazing change. Make pain your internal adviser that something has got to change.
No PAIN, no GAIN!!
