Before you go any further, I want you to re-read the title to this blog and then contemplate it for awhile…(actually let me make it easier)…“look at what I have created”. And again: look at what I have created. With those six little words you can achieve the once believed to be impossible feat of…(drum roll please)…control over your own life.
Now if you don’t believe me then you are definitely going to have to read further. I will also like to take this opportunity to not apologise to you as there is a highly probable chance that I will be challenging you over the next few minutes.
I want you to carefully read through the following scenarios and see who is to blame in each case:
1. You have a car accident on your way to work.
2. You may need more surgery on your knee because it is painful when you walk.
3. You get dumped by your girlfriend.
4. You lose a bunch of money on the stock market.
5. You catch a cold and are sick for a number of days.
I am sure you know where this is going, even though you probably have more than a little resistance to voicing it. You probably think that maybe I could be responsible for a few of them, but how can I be responsible for the global economic crisis for example; or catching a cold?!?
The thing is that in EVERY situation you made the choices to be where you were, to do what you did, to not do what you did, to learn what you wanted to, to trust who you wanted to trust, to eat what you wanted to eat, to say what you wanted to say, etc, etc, etc. You were the one driving your life. Now that isn’t a bad thing. I see that as being a great thing. Because that means whatever is done, you have the personal power to do something about it. BUT you can only do something about it (you only have the power) if you take responsibility and NOT blame others, or life, or circumstances, or timings.
Once you have accepted that you created your life’s experiences, then and only then, can you do something about it. You see if you blame things (or others) outside of yourself, then you are handing them the power over your life. You will have no control and will feel out of control as a result.
Take the scenario with the stock market. If I take responsibility, I accept that there are choices I could have made so that I was less affected by the economic recession. I could have diversified my investments, or sold out at a better point, or decided that I will leave the stocks untouched for a number of years, or consulted a financial professional that was anticipating the recession. No one forced me to put my money in the stock market. I put my money there and therefore I am responsible. So now I ask myself the question: What can I do now to turn this into a positive?
The bottom line is that you can blame everyone and everything outside of yourself when something does not go your way. But by doing so you give them or the situation the power and you go on to feel powerless. So the solution to any of your challenges in life is to say…LOOK AT WHAT I HAVE CREATED. And then know that you now have the power to do something about it. You can now turn any situation into a positive learning and growth experience if you want to.
By the way: I had the car accident because I wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing, my knee is a bit stuffed because I pushed it too hard, I got dumped because I wasn’t the perfect person for them, I didn’t take action on good advice about the impending recession so lost a bit of money and I only get sick when I don’t take care of myself and my immune system is low.
How is that for keeping it real!?!
All the best,
Carl
